The EDW Board felt the comments made by Kirk Humphreys required a response from EDW based on the stated beliefs of our organization. The letters were sent to Clay Bennett, Chair of the OU Board of Regents and to Wes Milbourn, General Manager of KFOR. An excerpt from the letter to Clay Bennett follows:
The Edmond Democratic Women join with men and women from across the state and the nation condemn- ing the comments of the chair-elect of the OU Board of Regents, Kirk Humphreys, on FlashPoint. From our organization’s values:
We believe in the equality of all people, regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, gender expressions, religion or nationality;
We believe all citizens should be able to live in a safe and civil society and we have an obligation to do what we can to ensure that for future generations;
Considering that, we believe the comments made by Mr. Humphreys in which he related homosexuality and pedophilia are wrong and jeopardize the safety and well-being of those individuals. After reviewing this segment of the show several times, it was clear Mr. Humphreys knew what he was saying and felt no remorse for his comments.
While we know you cannot “fire” him from the Board of Regents, we request you ask him for his resignation immediately. We do not need someone with those antiquated beliefs leading one of Oklahoma’s institutions of higher learning. The students deserve better. The alumni deserve better. The State of Oklahoma deserves better.
